Flake Foods

Not all flake foods are created equally. Most companies create their flake food by using ingredients that are dried and powdered (referred to as meals), reconstituted with water, then pressed back into a flake form. Some brands add more fillers like wheat and artificially enhance their protein levels with dangerous substances like melamine (a form of plastic). Some of the better flake foods are made by using fresh ingredients combined with necessary additives to fortify the mix. Primary ingredients are not the fillers that you will find in many “chain store” brands. Some of the best foods I have found are listed below along with their benefits.

Omega One Flake Foods-These foods are manufactured in Sitka, Alaska using fresh ingredients that are harvested specifically for use as fish food! The amount of pure ingredients in this food is amazing and most fish are happy to consume this brand as nothing is removed from the food that might be beneficial to fish health.

H2O Life VPure Flake Foods-These are truly remarkable foods as they use ingredients like fresh mysis as their primary base! The most surprising aspect of this food is the natural palatability it has to finicky fish like Mormyrids, Discus, Coral Gobies, Dragonets, Pipefish and Seahorses! Even predatory fish like Peacock Bass and Needlenose Gars will eat this food and that says a lot about a flake food!

Spectrum Foods-a lot can be said about this food as far as how trusted it has become over the years. It is not an exceptionally different type of flake, just consistently recognized as a great all around flake food. Fortified with garlic to help repel diseases, Spectrum flake is readily available at most specialty aquatic stores.

HBH Flakes-These are very good flake foods with a lot of color enhancing capabilities! The broad line of foods is well respected in the industry and is heavily used by breeding facilities and wholesale facilities.
